This is your brain on drugs…
If you remember the drug-free campaign a number of years back, then you will recognize the picture and finish the little phrase.
The real issue is that we now understand there are many other things your brain can be on that causes damage and steals from you the quality of life.
- poor nutrition
- leaky gut
- chronic inflammation
- …and the list goes on and on of what your brain can be negatively affected by!
I really want to protect my brain and preserve the integrity of my mental health…don’t you? Yet more and more we are seeing the effects of a “broken brain”. Depression, anxiety, mood disorders, panic attacks, ADD, and others. Current care plans seem to be an attempt at diagnosis and then throw a pharmaceutical at it and see what happens. But if the problem is a broken brain, the medications just keep stealing from the integrity of the structure, and true health can’t occur!
It’s important to understand that your brain needs three things for survival. The millions of neurons (nerve cells) and their vast amount of synapses (connections) all require three things to keep you moving, thinking, remembering and enjoying life.
They need fuel, oxygen and activation. That’s really it. When your neuron is able to be properly fueled, have adequate levels of oxygen and can be activated appropriately then it can receive and transmit…the tasks it was designed to perform.
Failure of this seemingly simple design leaves you having suboptimal brain function and the symptom picture can be diverse.
When trying to improve brain health you must first address six common deal breakers to brain health. This means that if one, or all, of these six things is present, your brain cannot be healthy. These are areas that must be addressed…first! They should be treated before the medication, before the neurotransmitter manipulation, before the “label” being placed on you…your child…your spouse.
Take care of the deal breakers first and give your brain the chance to heal!
Over the course of the next few weeks I want to share with you 6 keys to building a healthy brain. 6 keys that you can use to restore the integrity of your brain or the brain of your child. These are foundational steps. These are starting points. Without addressing the basics you will not have established a foundation that is stable enough to promote long-term and lasting changes!
